The Committee, of which the honorary chairman and active chairman are Robert Frost ’96 and Budd Schulberg ’36, will judge the papers and award the prize in early spring. In the spirit of Sidney Cox, any kind of undergraduate writing may be submitted; there is no restriction on subject or genre.

Founded in 1946, the Hillman Foundation awards monetary prizes for journalism and public service. It is a left-of-center organization, whose founder, Sidney Hillman was president of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America labor union, which was later merged into Unite Here and Workers United (SEIU). The Foundation continues to honor the legacy of its founding chairman, as well as promote the principles of his work, which focused on the need for social justice, economic fairness, and humanistic scholarship.
Since its inception, the foundation has awarded tens of thousands of dollars to students and scholars for research, scholarship, and lecture series on college campuses. In addition, it has provided a number of large grants to support medical research in the United States. The foundation was established with a bequest of the estate of William S. Hillman, an industrialist and founder of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of American labor union, and is governed by a board of trustees, led by Bruce Raynor, the president emeritus of Workers United.
The Sidney Thomas Prize is awarded annually for the best undergraduate student paper in art history. It is named in honor of Professor Sidney Thomas (1915-2009), a member of the department from 1961 to 1985, who was a distinguished Shakespeare scholar and art historian. His deep commitment to humanistic scholarship is reflected in the editorial work he did on two benchmark publications, The Nature of Art (with John Gassner, 1964) and Images of Man: Selected Readings in Arts and Ideas in Western Civilization (1972).
Each year, the Society for the History of Technology awards a number of Hillman Prizes to advance knowledge of the history of technology. These include:
The prestigious Judith A. Dibner Book Prize is presented to the author of an outstanding reference work that advances scholarship in the field of the history of science, technology and industry. The book must be published in the previous calendar year. The 2025 Judith A. Dibner Book Prize will be open from November 12, 2024 to January 15, 2025.
