The Sidney Award honors a scholarly book in the history of technology that is published within three years prior to the year of nomination. It is named in memory of Rutgers physics professor and Phi Beta Kappa member Sidney Brown (1840–1926), who served as the first president of the Society for the History of Science and Technology. The winner receives $3500 and a plaque. The Edelstein Prize was established in 1968 through the generosity of Sidney Edelstein, a noted expert on dyes and dye processes, founder of a successful specialty chemical manufacturing firm, and 1988 recipient of SHOT’s Leonardo da Vinci Award. The prize is awarded in honor of Edelstein’s commitment to excellence in scholarship in the history of technology and consists of an award of $3500 and a plaque.
